Dealing with periods in the workforce: How to manage them while being positive

It’s a constant battle women in the workforce deal with: how will I maintain being on my period while at work? Being on your period while doing tasks can be difficult, especially with the cramps and heavy flows that can come along. But don’t stress, PHP has your back and some tips on how to persevere:

  1. First, take a deep breath and make a plan of what you want to accomplish. You have a long day ahead of you, so taking it slow and having a planner with all you have to work on throughout the day/week can help you manage the stress that you may face throughout the day. Being stressed can affect menstrual cycles, so it’s best not to be so hard on yourself.
  2. Make sure you are prepared with essentials. Have water! Staying hydrated while on your period is important because it reduces discomfort and keeps your body running. Keep your bag stocked with your favorite period-friendly snacks and menstrual products like pads or tampons. This can increase your mood and relieve any worry because you have something to snack on, while also not being worried about leaking through your clothes. Plus, if a co-worker needed anything, they would have you!
  1. For the girls that go to schools with light colored pants, it’s important that you have a spare change of clothes just in case there is an accident. Although it may feel horrible at the time: these are common and there is no need to be ashamed. Menstrual products are not always 100% reliable, so leaks can’t always be prevented.
  1. If allowed, bring medications like Tylenol or Advil to help alleviate any pain or cramps that you may experience while working. Even having any of those on-the-go medications that you can put into your bag would make all the difference!
  1. Last but not the least, remain positive! You are a woman. Your body is strong, beautiful, and works in amazing ways. It can be annoying dealing with it at work, but it is a universal bodily function that many know and will understand if you need some time for yourself.

Being on your period continues to play a big part in how numerous women are able to deal with school and work. Don’t be afraid to notify others if you are on your menstrual cycle and need time to decompress. However, having advice on how to deal with it can help it go smoother.
